Claire Starz
Flute
Originally from Houston, Texas, Claire Starz began playing the flute at the age of nine while living in Paris. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree and a Performer's Certificate from Indiana University and studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. Prominent teachers have included William Bennett, Leone Buyse, Kate Lukas, and Thomas Robertello.
Claire has performed with the National Repertory Orchestra (CO), the Texas Festival Orchestra at Roundtop (TX), the Bloomington Camerata (IN), and the Baytown Symphony Orchestra (TX). She has also performed at the Lake Placid Institute (NY), the Domaine Forget Music and Dance Academy (Québec), and the William Bennett International Flute Summer School (Surrey, England).
Claire enjoys giving recitals and playing chamber music. She has performed as soloist with the Baytown Symphony Orchestra after winning its Young Artist Competition in both 1997 and 1999. In 2001 and 2002, she gave many solo recitals around the London area including the Bloomsbury International Lunchtime Concert Series. She also received the Mathilda Heck Woodwind Award and Third Prize overall at the WAMSO Young Artist Competition in 2003. Currently, she performs as a guest artist with Chamber Music Hawaii and Terra Nova, a contemporary chamber music ensemble.
An avid flute teacher, Claire has taught privately since 1996 and has taught on the faculty of the University of Houston’s “Floot Fire.” As a licensed Kindermusik® educator, Claire also enjoys teaching music to Hawaii’s children. When not playing the flute, Claire enjoys reading, hanging out with friends and family, eating great food, and dancing ballet.
