David Saltzman
Tuba
Dave Saltzman has been the Principal Tubist of the Honolulu Symphony since 1997. He also joined the Honolulu Brass Quintet, an ensemble of Chamber Music Hawaii, as their Tubist in 1997. David has performed with several other orchestras throughout the United States and Canada, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and the Windsor Symphony. An active music educator, David began teaching Tuba at the University of Hawaii’s Brass Department almost immediately after joining the Symphony. David also has a private studio here in the Islands where he teaches music lessons.
Much to the dismay of their older sister, David and his twin brother Andrew were born in New York in October of 1974. David began playing the Tuba after receiving “extra credit” to take up the instrument in his 4 th grade band class. Little did he or his family realize what a life changing experience this decision would be. While in high school and college, David attended the New York State Music Camp & Institute (later known as the Hartwick College Summer Music Festival) where, among other things, David met his future wife and brother-in-law.
Prior to coming to the Islands, David was exposed to a veritable “Who's Who?” in Tuba pedagogy. His undergraduate degree came from Indiana University where he was a student of both Harvey Phillips and Daniel Perantoni. While at Indiana, David was awarded a Performer's Certificate in recognition of his exceptional performance at the school. After graduating in 1996, David went to the University of Michigan for one year to study under Fritz Kaenzig, Principal Tubist with the Grant Park Symphony in Chicago. Most recently, David returned to the mainland to finish his master's degree at the Peabody Conservatory and studied with Toby Hanks from 2001-2003. During that time David also studied with David Fedderly, Principal Tubist of the Baltimore Symphony and a faculty member teaching Tuba at the Juilliard School of Music.
David was the winner of the Colonial Euphonium Tuba Quartet's first Tuba Solo Competition in Albany, New York in 1996. He has performed as a featured soloist at the British Tuba Euphonium Convention in Birmingham, England as well as the International Women's Brass Conference held in 1997 in St. Louis, Missouri.
David and his wife Barbara are the proud parents of their daughter, Eve Birdie, who was born on July 18th, 2004 at the Queen's Medical Center. Eve is an active little girl who began "playing" the tuba at the age of one and a half. While we enjoy her trying the tuba herself, we hope that it does not mean more tubas are going to be coming into our home any time soon. Stucci and Lady, Eve's two poodles, have enjoyed their new role as the "big sisters" in the family.
