"I don't believe an orchestra should exist in an ivory tower, but should find its relevance
in the life of its community. Please remember, this orchestra belongs to the community."
- Steve Dinion, timpanist, percussionist

Duane White

Violin

Duane White has been a violinist in the Honolulu Symphony since 1970. A native of Seattle and a graduate of the University of Washington, he studied under Emanuel Zetlin and Donald McInnes. Following graduation with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, he taught strings in the Spokane school system for one year before joining HSO.

In 1976, he was the first musician under the Musicians Union contract to take a sabbatical, traveling to Germany to play in what is now the South Westphalia Philharmonic.  His year in West Germany included regular performances with the Cologne and Düsseldorf city operas.  Duane has also played with the Spokane Symphony, the Colorado (Boulder) Music Festival, and with Tony Bennett in Las Vegas.

Duane is active in Honolulu as a church musician and teaches violin and piano at Hawaiian Mission Elementary School.  In 2005, he began a string program at Lutheran High School.  He resides in Makiki with his wife, Carol, a college librarian, with whom he shares “cat parenting.”  Duane enjoys reading, playing the piano, hiking, and camping on the North Shore.
