Jeff Merriman

Trombone

Jeff Merriman is currently serving a one-year position as Associate Principal/2nd Trombone with the Honolulu Symphony.  Originally from Minneapolis, MN, Jeff’s musical career began at the University of Minnesota while studying with Professor Thomas Ashworth, Trombonist with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Upon completion of his Bachelors of Music degree, Jeff was accepted into Northwestern University’s Masters of Music program where he studied with Chicago Symphony Orchestra Trombonists Michael Mulcahy and Charlie Vernon and Detroit Symphony Bass Trombonist Randy Hawes.  He completed his M.M in Trombone Performance and Literature in 2006.    

Merriman has established himself as a successful solo music competitor.  In 2006, he won the Schubert Club Young Artists Competition in Minneapolis after receiving runner-up in 2005. Also in 2005, Merriman won first prize at the Thursday Musical Competition in Minneapolis after being named runner-up in 2003.  Other awards include Finalist at the Brevard Music Center Concerto Competition and Semi-Finalist with the WAMSO (Women's Auxiliary of the Minnesota Orchestra) Competition. He also received an invitation to perform at the Hungarofest International Trombone Competition in Budapest, Hungary in 2005.

Jeff has appeared as a performer in the United States, Austria and Germany.  His most notable experiences include performances with the Chicago Music of the Baroque, South Bend Symphony, Rockford Symphony, and the Illinois Symphony. He spent the summer of 2006 in Europe after being selected to participate in the internationally renowned 5 week American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) festival in Graz, Austria.  The latter half of the summer included a 5 week tour with the musical production of “Grease” in Munich, Germany.  He has also spent 2 summers with the Brevard Music Festival in Brevard, North Carolina, where he has served as the Teaching Assistant and 2nd Trombonist with the Brevard Music Center Faculty Orchestra.  He has also performed with artists Clay Aiken and the Temptations.

Jeff is also a sports fanatic and proudly supports the Minnesota Twins, Gophers, Wild, and the Chicago Cubs.  He is an avid outdoorsman and keeps active by swimming, running, hiking and playing volleyball.
