"I don't believe an orchestra should exist in an ivory tower, but should find its relevance
in the life of its community. Please remember, this orchestra belongs to the community."
- Steve Dinion, timpanist, percussionist

Violinist Nikki Routman has been active as a soloist, chamber musician, clinician and teacher, gaining recognition for her performances, lectures and collaborations in the United States and abroad.

Nikki grew up in Tokyo, Japan, studying violin with at the Talent Education Institute (Suzuki Method) with founder Dr. Shinichi Suzuki and his apprentices at age five. She continued her musical studies three years later at the Preparatory Division of the Toho School of Music in Tokyo with renown violist Sumiko Edo.
Nikki holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Pre-Medicine from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Masters in Music from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is currently completing a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree (ABD) in Violin Performance from the same institution, anticipating graduation for May 2007.

Prior to her appointment with the Honolulu Symphony in 2006, Nikki was the Assistant Principal Violin II of the Greeley Philharmonic and section violinist of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra. She continues to perform regularly with the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, CO during the summer. Previously, Nikki performed with the orchestras of Austin, Boulder, Charleston (SC), Cheyenne, Corpus Christi, Fort Collins and Temple. With these orchestras and various other projects, she had the privilege of performing under the direction of notable conductors including Marin Alsop, Giora Bernstein, Michael Christie, Andreas Delfs, Akira Endo, Jahja Ling, Timothy Muffit, Seiji Ozawa and Lawrence Leighton-Smith.

She is also equally as committed to teaching, having served as an instructor of violin at the University of Colorado at Boulder as a sabbatical replacement. She has also been a graduate teaching assistant and part-time instructor for the Continuing Education Department of CU, and has served on the faculty at the Conservatory Music in the Mountains Festival in Durango, CO. Nikki has been a private instructor for ten years, and is a strong advocate of student involvement in chamber music and orchestra.

An avid chamber musician herself, Nikki performs regularly in workshops and recitals throughout the year. As founding member and 2nd violinist of the Veritas Quartet, her group was selected as the “emerging artist” group for the 2004 Yehudi Menuhin Chamber Music Seminar in San Francisco, performing in concert with Toby Appel and the Alexander and Cypress String Quartets. With the Veritas Quartet, she performed regularly around Colorado in recital appearances, and performed on several occasions as a quartet soloist. Nikki studied chamber music with the Cavani, Ying and Takacs Quartets, Erika Eckert, Anne Epperson, Judith Glyde, and Anton Nel. Notable solo masterclass appearances include James Dick, Vadim Gluzman, Lynn Harell, Yo-Yo Ma, Roman Nodel, Itzhak Perlman, among others.

Nikki performs on an 1879 Alphonsus Della Corte violin and a Sartory bow.
