"I don't believe an orchestra should exist in an ivory tower, but should find its relevance
in the life of its community. Please remember, this orchestra belongs to the community."
- Steve Dinion, timpanist, percussionist

Pauline Bai

Cello

From a musicians' family, Pauline Ping Bai started playing the cello at age eight. When she was thirteen she won the third prize at the First National Youth Cello Competition in Beijing, China. She received both her Bachelor and Master of Music degree from the prestigious Shanghai Conservatory as a holder of the Outstanding Performance Scholarship. In 1997, she came to America and continued her advanced studies with Eleanore Schoenfeld in Los Angeles. Later she also studied with Rajan Krishnaswami in Seattle. She spent one year in Perth, West Australia and played with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, while studying with Rod McGrath, the former Associate Principal Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra and Principal Cellist of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Since the 2001-2002 season she has been playing cello with the Honolulu Symphony.

Ms. Bai has been active in playing solo recitals and chamber music, including recitals at the Lyceum Theatre in Shanghai and other venues in China. She was the cellist of the Shanghai String Quartet at the International Festival of Chamber Music and Ensemble Music in Lyon, France during the summer of 1991, including String Quartet Master Classes with Prof. Alain Meunier (Conservatoire de Paris). In 1993, she toured Taiwan and Hong Kong for the 20th Century Contemporary Music Festival as the principle cellist with the Shanghai Youth Symphony. In April of 1995, she played with the Shanghai String Quartet, co-performing the Mendelssohn String Octet in E-flat with the Victoria String Quartet (members of the Hong Kong Philharmonic) in Hong Kong's City Hall Concert Hall. Starting in 1992 she also played with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Bai taught at the Shanghai Conservatory as a Lecturer in Cello for three years before coming to the United States. Since 1993 she has been teaching cello students from all different ages. While she is not playing her cello, she enjoys traveling, hiking, cooking and gardening.
