
Paul Barrett
Bassoon
Paul Barrett has served as Principal Bassoonist with the Honolulu Symphony since 1977. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, he also attended the Eastman School of Music and the Interlochen Arts Academy. His primary bassoon teachers include George Goslee, Norman Herzberg, K. David van Hoesen & Gerald Corey. He has participated in the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Music Academy of the West, the Blossom Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival and the Kapalua Music Festival. At the age of 17, he served as second bassoonist with the Louisville Orchestra for the 1972-73 season. He attended ten consecutive years of seminars for woodwind musicians with the famed French flautist Marcel Moyse in Brattleboro, Vermont; in1979 he hosted Mr. Moyse in an appearance in Honolulu, where Mr. Moyse gave master classes and conducted a concert with the HSO woodwind section.
Mr. Barrett has also served as a lecturer in Bassoon at the University of Hawaii since 1978, and was the full-time first chair bassoonist with the Royal Hawaiian Band from 1993-1995. At the University of Hawaii he has given a number of faculty recitals, many of them featuring original works for bassoon in combination with other instruments and for solo bassoon that Mr. Barrett has written. He has been frequently been commissioned to make arrangements of Children's, Pops and Hawaiian music for the Honolulu Symphony, and is fluent with the music notation software Finale.
As a conductor, Paul has led the Maui Symphony and the Honolulu Symphony Musicians. In addition to performing bassoon concerti with the UH Orchestra, the Oahu Civic Orchestra and the Maui Symphony, he has soloed with the Honolulu symphony, performing Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in Bb, K.191 three times at various Mozart Festivals, Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante twice, Weber’s Bassoon Concerto in F on tour with the orchestra at the Kahilu Theater in Waimea on the Big Island, and Elgar’s Romance for Bassoon and Orchestra at Honolulu Hale. He appeared as a soloist in the Masterworks series of concerts with the symphony in April, 2001, performing John William’s Sacred Trees.
Mr. Barrett has been married to HSO Assistant Concertmaster Judy Barrett since 1982. The Barrett family lives in Kailua and includes their son Colin, 20 and daughter Meghan, 17 and four poodles.
