Robert Johnson
Horn
With his beautiful sound and heartfelt musicianship, hornist Robert Johnson, still in his early twenties, has already established himself as an outstanding artist with a highly promising future. Mr. Johnson's performances are marked by an impressive command of his difficult instrument, and his ability to utilize a wide array of sounds and colors position him at the forefront of the next generation of great hornists. A graduate of Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, he studied with Principal Horn of the Houston Symphony, International Soloist, and renowned pedagogue William VerMeulen. During his summers at the Aspen, Sarasota, and Tanglewood Music Festivals, he has studied with Julie Landsman (Metropolitan Opera), Eric Ruske (Soloist), and John Zirbel (Montreal Symphony).
In constant demand as a performer, the 2007-2008 concert season marks Mr. Johnson's busiest to date with solo, chamber, and orchestral performances in cities and venues across the nation. After completing a single season with Michael Tilson Thomas and the New World Symphony, where he holds the distinct honor of being the only hornist in its history to perform the Second Horn Concerto of Richard Strauss with the orchestra, Mr. Johnson is proud to join the long-standing tradition of excellence within the horn section of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra.
At the request of violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman, Mr. Johnson performs with the Perlman Music Program at both Shelter Island, NY and Sarasota, FL. Upcoming and recent engagements include concerts with the Cascade Festival of Music in Bend, Oregon, the Cincinnati Pops, the Nashville String Machine Studio Orchestra, the New World Symphony at Carnegie Hall, the Tanglewood Music Festival in the Berkshires, recordings with the Houston Symphony and Grand Opera, the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, solo engagements in Cincinnati, Chicago, and Miami, and recital appearances in Cincinnati and New York.
Mr. Johnson remains steadfast to his commitment to serving the community through his musical gifts and has played dozens of concerts for thousands of children and nursing home patients in the Cincinnati, Houston, and Miami areas. He is also an author and photographer, contributing to the International Horn Society's Horn Call Magazine, the Houston Symphony Magazine, and Colorado's Strings in the Mountains Festival. Mr. Johnson plays on a hand-crafted, custom made F/B-flat double horn built by Keith Berg of Canada.
