Steve Dinion
Percussion
A native of Virginia, Steve Dinion first began studying drums at the age of 8 while performing with the American Revolution-era marching group the Northern Virginia Patriots. He continued his percussion studies and eventually received his BM from Oberlin, where he studied with marimba soloist and pedagogue Michael Rosen. Steve also earned a BA from Oberlin in Russian and Soviet Studies. He also attended masterclasses with timpanists Cloyd Duff and Fred Hinger, and took lessons with percussionists Michael Bookspan, Doug Howard and Thomas Stubbs. After graduating from Temple University, where he studied with Philadelphia Orchestra percussionist Alan Abel and received his MM, he joined the Honolulu Symphony as Associate Principal Timpanist and Percussionist in 1992.
In addition to his work with the Honolulu Symphony, Steve performs with the contemporary chamber music ensemble Terra Nova. He has also performed with the Honolulu Percussion Quartet, the Honolulu Marimba Band, Chamber Music Hawai’i, Lutheran Church of Honolulu’s Bach Chamber Orchestra, and the Central Union Church Sinfonia. Steve has also taught private concert percussion lessons for over a decade, and gave a marimba clinic at Hawai'i's first Day of Percussion at BYU-Hawai'i in 2006.
Steve has also been active in non-musical community activities during his time in Hawai’i. He serves as a Board member of the Musicians’ Association of Hawai’i, as a member of the American Friends Service Committee Hawai’i Area Program Committee, and as coordinator for Hawai’i Labor for Peace and Justice. He has also volunteered with the Life Foundation, was a precinct captain for 1998's Protect Our Constitution campaign, and was a member of the Grantmaking Committee for the Hawai’i Peoples Fund.
Steve lives in Makiki with his two orange cats, Jake and Beau, and his vintage 1950’s-era marimba.
