Sheryl Shohet

Violin

Sheryl Shohet, originally from Wisconsin, has resided and taught music in Hawai'i for the past 21 years. She earned her Bachelor's degrees in violin and music education from Drake University in Iowa and received a Master's degree in violin from the Hartt School of Music in Connecticut. Before moving to Hawai'i, Ms. Shohet taught strings for three years at Graceland College (Iowa) and was first violinist in the Des Moines Symphony and String Quartet, the Hartford Symphony, and the Colorado Philharmonic. She has appeared as a soloist with the Drake Symphony, Des Moines Youth Symphony, Graceland College-Community Orchestra, and Colorado Philharmonic.

Sheryl Shohet has been a first violinist in the Honolulu Symphony since 1983. She teaches at her home studio in Waipio Gentry and runs a violin program at Waiau Elementary School. Her student violin ensemble, Na Mele O Suzuki, enjoys spreading joy through music at senior meal programs, Honolulu Symphony lanai concerts, and at other sites throughout Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. Na Mele O Suzuki has been invited to perform in Japan in 2006.

Ms. Shohet co-founded the Hawai'i Suzuki Strings and the Hawai'i Suzuki Institute. She is active in the Suzuki Association of Hawai'i, Hawai'i American String Teachers Association, Hawai'i Music Teachers Association, and Honolulu Church of Christ.

Sheryl especially enjoys traveling with her daughter Heather, a freshman at Moanalua High School, to attend mainland conferences, continue her studies, and teach at various summer Suzuki Institutes across the mainland.
