Grammy Nomination for Pops CD
of Clooney's 'Last Concert'

The Honolulu Pops recording, "Rosemary Clooney: The Last Concert," has been nominated for a Grammy, alongside Bette Midler, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand and Rod Stewart for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

The late Clooney was nominated for a Grammy Award many times during her illustrious career, yet never won. The win could mean a first Grammy not only for the Honolulu Symphony, but for "America's Favorite Girl Singer," too.

The CD features not only Clooney performing with the Pops, but the orchestra alone in a medley of five familiar tunes arranged by Matt Catingub. The state of Hawai’i has reason to be proud of this international recognition, a well-deserved achievement for our Honolulu Pops Orchestra.

A reviewer on Amazon.com suggested, “Close your eyes and let her whisk you away to a stage in balmy Hawai'i. It's amazing, the effect a terrific band and a live audience have on her performance.”

Another had this to say: “A world class symphony orchestra…one heck of a big band…and the one and only girl singer Rosemary Clooney…what a fabulous combination.”

Pops Conductor Matt Catingub commented, “Rosemary always treasured her time in Hawai'i, and it's an honor that her last recording features our beloved orchestra."

On the CD, one can hear Ms. Clooney say at the end of the show, “Thank you for one of the best nights of my life.”

This recording was made possible through a special agreement with the Honolulu Symphony Musicians to allow all the Pops concerts during the 2001-2002 season to be recorded without compensation, until and unless a CD was actually produced. According to Union rules, musicians must be compensated for every performance that is recorded.
