"I don’t believe an orchestra should exist in an ivory tower, but should find its relevance
in the life of its community. Please remember, this orchestra belongs to the community.”
- Steve Dinion, timpanist, percussionist

January 30 to February 3, 2004 - Otello
Hawai'i Opera Theater

HOT's General and Artistic Director, Henry Akina, is always seen in the lobby during opera season and is shown here with Nancy Bannick and Jim Moffitt (left) and other friends and supporters who attended Otello.

Former state legislator from Mililani Sam Lee poses for a snapshot during intermission of Verdi's Otello. Behind him are HOT mugs, T-shirts, and other opera memorabilia for sale in the lobby.

Local opera expert Jim Becker has his binocs ready for the rest of Otello. Next to him are Jim Moffitt whose bass clarinet tones could be heard rising from the pit, and Mazie Hirono, former lieutenant governor and opera fan.

Alex Santiago, chair of the Democratic party of Hawai'i, talks with Jim Moffitt outside the lobby of Blaisdell Concert Hall on the Sunday afternoon performance of Otello.

Jim Decker, Eric Mathis, and Mike Szabo make up the trombone section of the Honolulu Symphony. Former Symphony trombonist, Mike Becker, joins the section for Otello, as Verdi's score calls for large orchestra. Here at intermission the players are not rehearsing - rather they are reading through some non-Verdi charts just for kicks.
