"I don’t believe an orchestra should exist in an ivory tower, but should find its relevance
in the life of its community. Please remember, this orchestra belongs to the community.”
- Steve Dinion, timpanist, percussionist

February 27 to March 4, 2004 - The Merry Widow
Hawai'i Opera Theater

Lea Woods Friedman

Audience members Jo Munitz, Wyn Aubrey-Child and Don Child went backstage to visit Lea Woods Friedman, who sang the featured role of Valencienne. Jo met Lea's family through a friend when Lea was four years old, and has remained a friend of the family as Lea grew up over the years.

Shown here during intermission of The Merry Widow are clarinetist James Moffitt, retired journalist and columnist for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin Lyle Nelson, and Bob and Pearl Ann Schwartz of Ardsley, New York.

Artist Paul Hosch, who enjoys sketching classical and jazz musicians performing, strikes a pose in front of Blaisdell Concert Hall before going to see The Merry Widow.

During intermission of The Merry Widow, Norma Nichols, Director of the Gallery on the Pali and Secretary for Chamber Music Hawaii, enjoys the company of former State of Hawaii deputy attorney general Ted Clause.

As part of the backstage party after the final performance of opera season, the set of Merry Widow was turned into a dance floor. Celebrating the successful season by dancing to music of the 80's, ballet dancer and instructor Elizabeth Miller rocks out "at Maxim's" along with other audience members, singers, crew, and Symphony musicians.
